Late last summer after crafting these earrings I hurried up into the hills to photograph the new collection. In my haste to get everything photographed before the sun set, I lost one. For months I searched for it. I would walk this small section of road for hours, moving slowly and working in a grid to scan as much ground as possible. I can recall at least three occasions in which I used a metal detector. I tried searching during different lighting, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunlight reflecting off of the metal. I even tried to get Walter to find it by scent. All of this to no avail.
You might think the story ends with me finding the lost earring once I “let go” and accepted the loss, and that would be both correct and also incorrect. In reality it’s a bit more complicated. I did eventually give up hope of finding the earring, but what I did not give up was the desire to find it. I spent a good amount of time trying to articulate the lesson I learned as I searched, surrendered, and eventually found the lost earring, but I can’t seem to put it into words. I suspect that lesson was for me alone, but I hope that you’ll trust me when I say these earrings come with a lesson or two. And perhaps if you’re feeling a bit lost right now they’ll bring with them a lesson that’s just for you.
